  • Designing information platforms that support sustainability work
    • Calculating the use-value of different sustainability indicators,
    • Designing decision-oriented sustainability indicators,
    • Creating context-sensitive indicators
    • Integrating numeric indicators with text-based qualitative analysis and
  • Integrating CSR/sustainability information, and their supporting technologies, with extant financial and management information systems and
  • Making effective use of visualization

He has been awarded several patents in the fields of information complexity and understanding and been sought after by corporations and government agencies to solve problems in complex information modeling, analysis, and interpretation. His clients have included Intel, IBM, Oracle, AC Nielsen, the World Bank and several branches of the U.S. Government. He has significant experience in both entrepreneurial and large corporate settings.

Over the years, he has chaired a variety of industry organizations including the OLAP Council and the Analytical Solutions Forum. He has been an invited speaker, keynote or chair at many conferences and workshops. And he is the author of numerous publications for both scholarly and trade journals. He wrote the Decision Support Column for Database Programming & Design and the Analytical Solutions column for Intelligent Enterprise. He is also the author or co-author of several reference books including OLAP Solutions: Building Multidimensional Information Systems 2nd edition, which is used around the world in both graduate computer science and MBA programs.

Erik has also been an avid practitioner of meditation for over thirty years and has participated in many fasting/meditation retreats. The insights gleaned from mediation have complemented, and sometimes even guided, his professional work.
